{"id":719,"date":"2019-05-23T12:05:15","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T12:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/?p=719"},"modified":"2019-05-23T14:34:47","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T14:34:47","slug":"seapowers-goals-and-activities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/?p=719","title":{"rendered":"SeaPoWer&#8217;s goals and activities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"color:#00070a\" class=\"has-text-color\">To achieve an improved seaweed farming technology \u2013 the tubular nets \u2013 that transform the lives of women seaweed producers, supports their aspirations, farming and livelihoods needs and helps the sustainable integration of seaweed farming in the local economic and ecological landscapes, Sea PoWer implemented a unique approach linking <strong>innovation with women&#8217;s empowerment<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#000608\" class=\"has-text-color\">In partnership with the women seaweed farmers, we focused on :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>testing and improving the design of tubular nets for enhanced seaweed productivity; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br>  <\/li><li>validating the relevance and value of this new technology for improving women seaweed farmers\u2019 wellbeing and empowerment. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We ran:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>seaweed growth pilots with tubular nets in partnership with the women seaweed farmers from two communities in Zanzibar, <\/li><li>training and capacity building workshops with the women seaweed farmers on tubular net making and handling, safety at sea skills, record keeping, monitoring of seaweed growth and recording of environmental changes,<\/li><li>group management and social capital strengthening (co-learning, election of a secretary, oversight of seaweed growth trials etc.) <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" src=\"http:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/canva-life-jackets-1024x602.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/canva-life-jackets-1024x602.png 1024w, https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/canva-life-jackets-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/canva-life-jackets-768x452.png 768w, https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/canva-life-jackets.png 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Getting familiar with life jackets for greater safety at sea.<br>Photo credit: C. Brugere<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At national fairs and international conferences (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiomsa.org\/wiomsa-symposium-2017-day-1-2\/\">WIOMSA Symposium 2017<\/a>, WAS\/EAS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquaeas.eu\/39-uncategorised\/383-welcome-to-aqua-2018\">Aqua2018<\/a> conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gafconference.org\/home.htm\">GAF7 2018<\/a>).<\/li><li>To the international scientific community: our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yfk7MJh5jA4\">video<\/a> \u201c<strong><em>Making Waves: Rethinking Seaweed Farming for Women&#8217;s Empowerment<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; was submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/womeninseafood.com\/\">Women in Seafood Competition<\/a> at the World Seafood Competition at the World Seafood Congress, Reykjavik, Iceland, 10-13 September 2017. Paul<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We promoted the tubular net technology and the Sea PoWer approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To other seaweed producers in Tanzania mainland and in Kenya.<\/li><li>To other Blue Economy Challenge winners and other partners &nbsp;at high-level networking events, e.g. Aquaculture Big Thin Tanzania, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We established links with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#00070a\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong>ZaSCI &#8211; Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/zasci.weebly.com\/\">www.zasci.webs.com<\/a>) &#8211;  An initiative involved in seaweed innovative farming and value addition in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Most seaweed farmers are members of ZaSCI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#000305\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong>Seaweed traders (ZANEA &#8211; Zanzibar East Africa Seaweed Company).&nbsp;<\/strong>This export company interacted with the women seaweed producers of Sea PoWer in view of developing a possible collaboration for the marketing of the higher valued seaweed \u2018Cottonii\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#000305\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong>Milele Zanzibar Foundation\u2019s Panje Project&nbsp;<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mzfn.org\/\">https:\/\/www.mzfn.org\/)<\/a>, which teaches Zanzibari women how to swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International Media Attentio<\/strong>n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#000507\" class=\"has-text-color\">Media outreach took several forms during the project and continues to this day.
