{"id":308,"date":"2018-11-13T13:28:19","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T13:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/?p=308"},"modified":"2018-12-08T17:54:15","modified_gmt":"2018-12-08T17:54:15","slug":"inland-fisheries-in-the-economics-of-the-environment-and-biodiversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/?p=308","title":{"rendered":"The potential of inland fisheries for alleviating hunger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<strong>The work<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis work was commissioned in 2014-15 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/fishery\/en\">Fisheries &amp; Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a> (FAO), a United Nations agency leading international efforts to defeat hunger.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>My role<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI was the lead author and coordinator of a study recognising, demonstrating and capturing the value of inland fisheries&#39; ecosystem services in decision-making under <a href=\"http:\/\/teebweb.org\/agrifood\/home\/teebagrifood\/\">The Economics of the Environment and Biodiversity (TEEB) for Agriculture and Food initiative<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<b>Overview<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFreshwater ecosystems, and inland fisheries in particular, are under threat:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-371\" height=\"237\" src=\"http:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Dam-1.png\" style=\"margin: 20px; float: right;\" width=\"327\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t65% of the world&#39;s rivers are under medium to high levels of threat,\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tIt is expected that there will be a 100% increase in water withdrawal by 2050,\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tThere are 40,000 large dams worldwide, all of these impact riverine fisheries to some degree,\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tAn estimated 470 million people live downstream from dams in riverine communities that are at risk from poorly planned and managed dam and water developments.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tBreaking new ground, this holistic assessment looks at the impacts, externalities and dependencies between fish production, environmental, social and economic systems. Considering different fish production systems and water management scenarios in different parts of the world, the report examines the full range of services that freshwater ecosystems provide and their trade-offs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe study takes stock of the current state of knowledge on the multiple services (benefits) that fish production generates, globally and in three case studies in North America (Columbia River), Asia (Lower Mekong Basin) and Africa (Lake Victoria Basin).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe case studies provide an analysis of the economic value of the provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services of inland capture fisheries and freshwater aquaculture under existing and alternative water management scenarios. This enables quantifying the changes in ecosystem services values arising out of management alternatives. The main ecosystem se<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-376\" src=\"http:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/combo2-130x300.png\" style=\"float: right; width: 148px; height: 342px; margin: 20px 15px;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/combo2-130x300.png 130w, https:\/\/cecilebrugere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/combo2.png 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/>rvices considered in each system are:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(I) Food production (animal proteins and nutrients);\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(II) Water quality;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(III) Biodiversity;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(IV) Carbon fixation and greenhouse gas emissions;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(V) Nutrient cycling;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t(VI) Income and livelihood support.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOther ecosystems services were included where important.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>The report<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t1)<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/doc.teebweb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/FeederStudy_InlandFisheries_WEB-1.pdf\">Executive and policy makers&#39; summary<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhilst freshwater fish is vital to the nutrition, food security and livelihoods of the global population, particularly those in developing counties,&nbsp;the value of inland fisheries and freshwater aquaculture is massively underestimated and often overlooked in water development agendas. The report provides key messages and recommendations at the attention of policy makers to change this.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t2)<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/img.teebweb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/InlandFisheries_PART1_web.pdf\">Context <\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBuilding on findings of the 2005 The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment that 60 percent of the earth&rsquo;s ecosystem&rsquo;s services were degraded or used unsustainably, the report places inland fisheries in an ecosystem perspective, offering an innovative framework to discuss production, interactions and externalities.
